The Machine Story
I’m still trying to piece things together. I was looking at this rune here and thinking back to the confluence before entering the underground.
The scarf was snapped between two pairs of travellers, two going one way and two going the other. To the left the buildings’ windows are open, but to the right the two other travellers are walking towards the other building that has the windows shut. Maybe the kingdom became divided and some wanted to be apart from the other kingdom and decided to create their own underground in the dark.
When I was flying through the pink desert, I was looking at a rune where travellers were riding on the backs of the machines and flying over their crops. It seems like a happy productive scene. In the confluence just before you enter here, you see the travellers on the backs of the machines like before, but this time the machine’s sights are on the people. I’m wondering if the people who chose to live underground made modifications to these machines. They tried to make them like the machines up in the surface to collect the scarves like the good travellers do, but theirs malfunctioned and started blasting violently into the travellers and snapping the scarves. They were meant to collect scarves but were accidentally programmed to go after the ones still on their bodies but in a violent way.
Another thing I noted was the difference in the machines from the city above to the ones in the city below. Above ground, if you look at the faces, they seem to have a more kind and noble face, like a knight and his armor. They seem to resemble the travellers if you look at their eyes. But if you notice underground the machines lift open their face mask to reveal one big ugly eye with a spotlight staring you down. Same type of machines but two different approaches to their duties. And personalities. They were made to collect scarves but the city above did it in a more productive gentle way and were useful.
Below, they are monstrous. The giant temerity at the end where they fly away from us where that city’s boundaries are. But because of the people above being so kind-hearted, they still allowed some people back up to the surface for limited reasons. Supplies, negotiations, etc. But something happened between the two groups of people that made them go to war with each other, resulting in a destroyed city. The machines crashed all over the sand above were perhaps like fallen soldiers. And the stones scattered throughout the game in the sand and snow are tombstones of people who died in the war.
Neither side won, which is why the entire city is abandoned and corroded by the winds and sand. Only the machines in hiding, and the cloths and whale cloths left behind, remain there with nothing to do, no master. I think it’s all very sad. But this is my take on the story here.
